Rugged phones usually compete on the obvious things: how far you can drop them, how long the battery lasts. The 8849 Tank 5 Pro competes on something rather more interesting to anyone who works with cameras — a built-in FLIR thermal imaging camera. Details are on the 8849 site.

Why a thermal camera is genuinely useful

The Tank 5 Pro’s headline feature over the standard Tank 5 is a 95-degree ultra-wide thermal camera built around a FLIR Lepton 3.1R sensor, with sensitivity down to 0.05°C.

That is not a gimmick for a working photographer or videographer. A thermal camera spots a light or a modifier overheating before it fails on set. It reveals whether a laptop or a mini PC is throttling under a long export by showing exactly where the heat is building. It checks whether an LED panel is running evenly across its surface. And for anyone shooting in a studio, it will find the draught, the failing connection or the overloaded extension before it becomes a problem. FLIR sells standalone thermal cameras for exactly these jobs at considerable cost; having one in the phone in your pocket is a genuine convenience.

The rest of the phone

The conventional cameras are a serious array: a 50MP main, a 50MP telephoto, a 50MP night-vision camera and a 32MP front camera. The night-vision camera is the unusual one — dedicated night-vision hardware is rare even on flagships, and for anyone documenting wildlife, security or low-light scenes it is a real capability rather than a processed approximation.

Elsewhere it is a proper rugged flagship: a MediaTek Dimensity 9400e, a 6.73-inch 3K AMOLED display, an enormous 17,600mAh battery with 120W charging, IP68 and IP69K sealing, and — unusually — a built-in 2K DLP projector rated at 220 lumens.

Our take

This is not going to replace anyone’s main camera, and it is not trying to. But as a second phone for location and field work, the combination of a FLIR thermal sensor, a dedicated night-vision camera and a battery that will outlast a long shoot makes a genuine case. The thermal camera alone is the sort of diagnostic tool that earns its keep the first time it catches a light about to fail.

Two caveats. The thermal resolution from a Lepton sensor is modest — useful for spotting hotspots and relative temperature differences rather than producing detailed thermographic images, so set expectations accordingly. And at $1,199 this is flagship money for what remains a niche device; the standard Tank 5, without the thermal camera, is $999.99, so you are paying around $200 for the FLIR sensor. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on whether you would actually use it.
